HOT ON THE FLOOR - UPDATED!
January 2010
Website
Our new website www.swinard.co.nz has been developed to showcase our services and to help your clients choose a timber floor for their building or renovation project.
Showroom
In our new Magdala Place workshop there is a showroom. We have divided the floor into different areas in order to show you and your client a variety of laying methods and finishes; floating and direct fix, prefinished and solid timber, as well as polyurethane and oil. Solid timbers are displayed as 1m x 1m sample boards on the wall, while prefinished engineered samples are displayed on free standing racks.
Chris Lee, our General Manager, is happy to meet you and/or your client by appointment. Please call him on 0274 324 946 to arrange a time.
New Products
Torrified Ash
A Prime Grade American Ash timber flooring, which is baked in a kiln at a very high temperature; this changes the colour to a rich chocolate brown, creating a perfect dark floor. It eliminates the time consuming staining process or the need to choose one of the more expensive dark timbers. It comes in a 172x19mm T&G plank.
Magic Oil 2k
This product is an oil-wax combination (using natural sources for both) which cross-links and dries by oxidation with the addition of a hardener component.
The combination of oil and wax leaves an open, breathing and diffusive surface which is uniformly matt and has a velvety appearance. It also enhances the colour and grain of your timber floor. It dries quickly (can be walked on after 12 hours), is resistant to household chemicals and is suitable for underfloor heating systems.
Stair Nosing
In order to finish your stairs or steps, we supply solid timber, slip resistant, stair nosings suitable for both solid timber and prefinished engineered stair treads. Made in two sizes (19mm and 14mm) they come in Kwila/Merbau, Maple, Oak and Victorian Ash, other species can be made to order. These nosings comply with current building codes and come in their natural state, they can then be stained (if required), and finished with polyurethane and/or oil to the required sheen level. Black, slip resistant, inserts are supplied separately and are installed after finishing, alternative insert colours are available on request.
Solid Timber Floors
We have samples of Pyinkado, Recycled Rimu and Beech to add to your presentation box. Additional timbers currently available include Tuakkyan, Purpleheart, Bamboo, Matai, Northern Brushbox, Tasmanian Oak and Victorian Ash. All can be viewed on our website and/or samples obtained from us.
Prefinished Engineered Timber Floors
We are able to source a wide range of top quality prefinished engineered flooring. This not only comes in a large variety of timber species, but in numerous finishes as well. A selection can be viewed on our website.
Fashion Trends
Plank flooring continues to reign supreme, as our most popular flooring. Available in solid and prefinished engineered, it ranges from 65mm to 200mm wide, with wider boards seeming to be more in vogue.
New finishes are the greatest point of difference, from whitewashed to black and everything in between. A variety of surface textures and finishes (such as the previously mentioned Magic Oil) are also available.
There is a swing back to more intricate/traditional flooring patterns - for example, herringbone and basket weave.
Environmental Issues
The best way to choose sustainable timber, and avoid contributing to global deforestation, is to look for Good Wood Products made under the guidance of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or similarly verified legal wood. Our preferred suppliers all have sustainability certification. For timber to be sustainable a tree must be planted for every one that’s harvested and the forest must maintain its ecological integrity.
Alternatively, use second hand timber. For instance, suitably prepared, recycled Rimu is available from reputable demolition yards.
Bamboo is another great renewable flooring option that’s not only very attractive and comes in a variety of colours, but is also extremely stable and hardwearing. It grows to full maturity in just five years (versus the 30-50 years of hardwoods), the original plant rejuvenates quickly.
Why use a Specialist Wooden Flooring Company?
One of our most frequently asked questions is why a potential client would choose a timber flooring specialist over a general flooring company.
All Inclusive Quotes and Awareness of Product Quality
Having discussed your requirements with you, we will prepare an all inclusive quote. Should you have an old floor that needs removing or a concrete slab that needs grinding and sealing, this will be itemised. It is important, when comparing quotes from other companies, that you consider what grade of timber flooring is being supplied. For example, there are many different grades of Oak – “Prime”, which has few of the natural characteristics found in wood, such as knots, versus “Feature”, which is much more rustic looking and significantly cheaper.
Timber Ownership Prior to Installation
Once you have paid your deposit the timber is legally yours, whether stored at our premises or on site.
